Common Cold Emergence

Know All The Details About Common Cold Emergence

Common cold is a mild form of upper respiratory tract disorder. On average, an adult experiences the common cold 4 to 6 times per year. Children experience it 6 to 8 times, about two times more common cold than adults. About 50% of total patients visiting the hospital suffer from a common cold. Therefore, the economic burden of Common cold on the health department is more than annual expenses of the influenza cold. Unlike influenza cold, causative agent of the common cold (rhinovirus) is a group of viruses belonging to different families. Usually common cold is due to an infection in the upper respiratory tract. But if it remains untreated, it can spread to other vital organs. According to researchers of a dissertation writing service, the bacterial infection increases the spread of this infection to other organs.

General Ratio Of The Common Cold

The common cold is a viral infection and highly striking human body disease. Even in developed countries, more than a billion people are suffering from common cold each year. The case of common cases is more frequent in school-going children as compared to adults.   Studies showed that in families with school-going children, common cold incidence reaches up to 12 times in a year. Some important symptoms of this mild form of disease are as follows;

  • Nasal stiffness
  • Nasal discharge
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes
  • Body pain
  • Headache
  • Exhaustion
  • Fever

Common Cold And Its Effect On Individual Performance

Most people ignore early, and mild symptoms of the common cold. Instead, they have a habit of consulting doctors when faced with extreme symptoms only. Unfortunately, common cold symptoms raise the economic burden, and affects the performance of a patient. In research, an author reported that the employee could not do their work for about 20 million days due to cold symptoms. Similarly, the absence of children from schools due to the common cold is about 22 million days.

Common Symptoms Of Common Cold And The Covid-19 Pandemic

The symptoms of common cold are somewhat similar to the symptoms of Covid-19. Some overlapping symptoms of both Covid-19 and the common cold are given as follows;

  • Fever
  • Body pain
  • Stiffness of nasal cavity
  • Headache
  • Emotional disturbance
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue

A Current Common Cold Scenario In The UK

The Covid-19 pandemic badly affected all public and private sectors throughout the world. There is a big list addressing harmful effects of the Coronavirus. But travelling and educational sectors are at the top of this list. The closure of schools during Covid-19 was a big step to control the wide spread of this disease. The emerging history of corona-virus flu and the common cold suggests that the children are the most affected entities. The number of Covid cases decreased to a great extent by the closing of schools. This lockdown also decreased the impact of Covid-19 as well as the number of common cold cases within the UK.

Lockdown Vs Common Cold Based Scenario in the UK:

According to statistics gathered by dissertation writers in UK, during the lockdown, the number of Pneumonia and Common cold cases also decreased. The number of deaths in England and Wales from August 2020 to January 2020 was 48.2 thousand. But the number of deaths due to Pneumonia was 13.6 thousand, way less than the deaths due to Covid. The same study explained that the deaths due to Influenza or common cold also decreased to 364 deaths. Thus this data suggested that the lockdown worked better to control the deaths by common cold in the UK. This is in comparison with the control related to Covid deaths.

Seasonal Changes and the Common Cold Scenario in UK:

Recent news show that after the opening of schools, cases of Common cold increased too. According to pulmonologists, another important reason behind the onset of Common Cold in England is the arrival of autumn. With the arrival of autumn season (September, October and November), the survival rate of Human rhinoviruses (HRV) also increases. The most common cause of widespread of common cold after the onset of Covid is immunosuppression. HRV is opportunistic and affects the immunosuppressive host. Hence, these days, the opening of schools at the arrival of the humid season made England suffer from the common cold.

A Possible Mechanism for Widespread Common Cold in the UK:

The current common cold emergence issue in the UK might have the following possible mechanisms;

  • After lockdown, the immune system’s periodic stimulation with virus’s attenuated form did not occur.
  • The immune system of such patients was not ready to deal with a world full of viruses.
  • With the arrival of autumn, the atmosphere of England became suitable for HRV multiplication.
  • The virus started multiplication in the hosts which were children.
  • The parents dealing with common cold infected children are susceptible to it as well.
  • The common cold may spread from children to the parent, and cases can multiply exponentially.

Recent Public Health England (PHE) Announcements.

  • According to Public Health England (PHE), no other variant of HRV or coronavirus is deleted among infected persons. PHE announced this a few days ago. Announcement highlighted that the number of patients suffering from common cold increases every day. The number of other respiratory diseases like Bronchitis and Pneumonia also increase with time. The age group of respiratory disorder patients ranges from under 15s to above 50s.
  • The practices of wearing a mask and social distancing are in place to prevent the occurrences of Common cold. But experts say after a long period of isolation, your body is not in the state to protect you from the Common Cold Virus.
  • The Academy of Medical Science head said that the host of any respiratory disorder have more chances of getting Covid in the winter. The common symptoms of Covid and common cold often lead to misconceptions or wrong diagnoses. So the UK government announced that people with any overlapping symptoms must go for a PCR test. A PCR test will detect the cause of symptoms, and appropriate treatment (isolation). This will help in controlling spread of the virus.
  • Further, the medical director at PHE addressed the UK nation to work on the following steps. This will help decrease NHS’s burden;
  • Wear a mask
  • Wash hands for 20 seconds
  • Walk in Open-air
  • Keep yourself warm
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Isolate yourself in case of any symptoms

The Government appealed to the public to follow all these steps. It emphasises on following the above steps. These will not only save you from coronavirus, but other diseases as well.
