Moderator Versus the Mediator Variable: What Is the Difference?

Many students are confused between moderators and mediator variables as they sound very similar on the surface. But, they both have very different purposes in research. Mediators explain the process of the relationship between two variables of a study. On the other hand, moderators impact the direction and strength of a relationship between variables.
